“A stone that looks satisfied with its position reflects the sense of ease the waller felt when placing it there.” – In the Company of Stone
Force and compliance are seemingly contrary concepts, but together they characterize my way of working with stone. For a project to move forward, there must be constant change. Each stone must enter the work flow at the right time and place for growth to continue. My job is to make way for what must be. Therefore, I force things to happen and accept the result as though it’s my only choice. My old self does the shoving, my new self does the accepting. Both selves operate in the same moment, my new self constantly bowing to my old self. The combined effort and non-effort define who I am in the workplace. My work personhood is formed by split personalities acting in concert. The two become the one I am.
